Teens making a difference

Preparing Safe, Confident Drivers Since 1998

Teens in the Driver Seat (TDS) program has been running strong in Nebraska since its start-up in 2013. Over the years, the number of schools participating has ranged from five to thirty-five with 2025 seeing twenty-five schools participating. Through student
organizations like Student Council, Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), Students Against Destructive Behaviors (SADD), After School Program, National Honor Society, Letterman Club, JOI Club, and Skills USA, countless activities have been done and teens reached with
lifesaving information. Since 2021, over 84,000 youth have been reached with traffic safety education through the TDS program. Topics covered are distracted driving, seat belt use, nighttime/drowsy driving, alcohol, and speeding.

Not only have a lot of teens been reached, driving knowledge and behavior has improved over the years. Schools participating have the option to have students take the Teen Driver Experiences survey. This survey covers all TDS driving topics and teen driver safety laws. Since 2013, improvements have been made in increasing seat belt
use, improving student knowledge around risks they face when driving, improved knowledge of the state’s teen driver laws and reduction of impaired driving. Malcolm and Howells-Dodge Senior High Schools have been outstanding partners in implementing the Teens in the Driver Seat program since 2013, demonstrating a long-standing commitment to youth traffic safety education. Long-term programs like the one
at Malcolm Public Schools and Howells-Dodge often become embedded in the school culture, earning recognition from local leaders and reinforcing a community-wide commitment to teen driver safety.

TDS is a free program for all Nebraska senior and junior high schools. Do you have an interest in joining in and making a difference? Contact Jeanne Bietz at Jeanne.bietz@nebraska.gov with any questions.
